Shrewsbury

The day after the wedding was a lazy day. We slept in as much as we could (we had to check out of the castle by 10:00. We wanted to spend more time in Shrewsbury, so we got an Airbnb right in the old part of town.

After a quick nap, we wandered the streets for Shrewsbury and took in the local sights.

Right across from our Airbnb was the Kings Head. We stopped in for a quick pint of beer and ran into a local that was born and raised in Shrewsbury. There is a wall painting depicting the Last Supper dated to around 1500. They had discovered the painting while doing some remodeling in the 1980s. There is also a small circular opening leading outside. The local told us that it was used to pass communion outside during the plage as there was a chapel here as well (hence the painting).

Kings Head Pub

This is one of Shrewsbury’s oldest surviving pubs. It was built in the late 15th century .

We got on the Sabrina Boat Tour to see Shrewsbury from the water. The weather was nice. The captain took us up the river on a peaceful trip. On the way back, he provided a commentary on the history of Shrewsbury. He pointed out all the various buildings and told us what they were. He also told us of all the famous people that are from Shrewsbury. I did not know many of them, but he did mention that Charles Darwin was baptized and went to school here. The only other name I recognized was the band T’Pau (80’s rock band) was also from Shrewsbury.

The Armoury

Next to the river where we got off the boat was a great little eatery called the Armoury. This was originally located elsewhere and moved in 1922. Dinner was good. A nice way to end the day.
