Buenos Aries, Argentina
While wandering the Palermo SoHo district of Buenos Aries, I came across Sullivans Irish Pub. I took advantage of this opportunity to continue my quest to try and rate Guinness Around the World.
Guinness has a special recipe for Argentina that is locally brewed by Rabieta Brewery. The Extra Stout is known as Foreign Extra Stout. This can be seen on the tap pull at the bar.
Foreign Extra Stout.
How does it compare?
When the beer arrived, the head on it was only about 1/2 inch thick. There were no nitrogen bubbles coming from the base of the beer. This was not a good sign as they had just poured the beers and they were served immediately.
I tested the thickness of the head with a quick poke of my finger to check the size of the peaks formed. No peak was formed. The head went flat immediately. In fact the head disappeared completely after only 2 minuets.
No peaks in the head after the finger test.
The color of the beer had the standard black, but lacked the creamy contrast of the nitrogen bubbles.
My first sip revealed a very bitter taste. There was no creamy texture or any carbonation. It was flat as if it had been left out for days.
This is far from the creamy sweet taste of Guinness found in Ireland. It is much closer to the bitter Guinness found in the states. But at least the Guinness in the states had nitrogen bubbles and a thick head.
On a scale of 1-10, I would rate this a 1.
