Day 11 - Grand Cayman

Today we made port in Grand Cayman. This will be our last port before we head back to Ft Lauderdale. The ship anchored off shore and we took tenders to get to land. We booked an excursion with Princess to snorkel with Cayman Divers. The excursion took us to two snorkel spots. The first one was a wreck of the USS Kittiwake. This is a former US Navy submarine rescue vessel that was purposely sunk in 2011 to create an artificial reef. A recent storm moved the wreck a little deeper, but we were still able to snorkel around it and dive down into it if we wanted to. There were a few fish around, but not a lot. Next the boat took us to Cheeseburger Reef. This reef is named for its proximity to a Burger King restaurant on shore. This was a popular and busy reef. Unfortunately most of the coral was dead and there was not much color to be seen. There was an abundance of fish, even a few barracuda!

After snorkeling, we stopped at Rackam’s Waterfront Bar and Grill. It was located on the pier that the dive boat was docked at. The rumrunners did a great job of cleansing the salt water taste from our mouths! The seafood was excellent as well.

We still had plenty of time to explore the island, so I found a local Irish Pub (Fidel Murphy’s) to continue my research on Guinness Around the World. (See separate blog).

I even had enough time for some souvenir shopping before I headed back to the boat.
